I heard that it was pretty much split even between the 2 of them around the year 2000
Utada, with a ratio of 8:2
Kukki vs. Hikki
I prefer Kuraki, but Utada appealed more to the elderly.

It's Utada...
It's not like Mai Kuraki wasn't popular. It's just that Hikaru Utada was too amazing.

1999 it was Utada.
2000 it was Kuraki.
And after that, it's been all Utada until she went on hiatus. Kuraki was more in-demand for fapping, though wwwww

I'd be too embarassed to say that I like Utada
That era was like the culmination of the girls' R&B boom which began in 1996. Singers like JUJU and Thelma Aoyama still came out after 2005, but the boom completely vanished around this time thanks to the mass influx of AKB.
I like Kuraki too, but it's not right to compare her to Utada who was a social phenomenon
Utada, Kuraki, Hamasaki. Who would've thought that all of them would disappear.
Kuraki was someone who acted like an artist and tried going up against Utada with just her lyric-writing w

Actually, that's the only decent release Kuraki had. She's an artist who has lived up to her reputation with just that one song, but Utada in her prime was just too great.

I think Kuraki's songs are more bearable to listen to now. When you listen to Utada's songs, they all seem so old. You can even hear about PHS there w

I don't get it when you say they sound old. Just listen to it while you bear in mind the sense of standards that they had at that time. I don't think there's anyone who'd listen to '60s songs now and compare it with our current standards.
Right, it's like criticizing the Beatles for sounding old-fashioned. All I can say is that you're stupid.
Kuraki's got a lot of nice songs. I still listen to quite a number of her songs.
Honestly though, only Kuraki's first 3 songs were good
I liked "Feel Fine"
Stay by my side
Secret of my heart
I think no one knows much outside of these 3 songs

Kuraki's side just wanted to set themselves up as the rival of massively profitable Utada one-sidedly. It was like how the Monkees felt they were the competitors of the Beatles. Regardless of whether you can compose songs or not. And that's why you can't hide that sense of lameness away from Kuraki. I liked them both, though.
Utada's a singer/songwriter. Kuraki's just a singer.
The stage is different in the first place.
Any proof that Utada writes her own stuff?

Why are you just saying that about Utada? Once you start arguing like that, then that makes all artists and bands have no proof unless they show the actual scenes and process where they're making the songs.
I think I'm witnessing history being falsely rewritten right in front of my eyes
Anime-wotas and Idol-wotas are Kuraki's allies
I still can't get over the fact that Kuraki and Utada are turning 32. I've always had this image that they're teenagers forever.
Kuraki just doesn't stand a chance, both in sales and ability. She was bad at singing, and her voice was so small, she shouldn't have been a singer in the first place. If you want to compare someone to Utada, it should be Hamasaki.
Is Kuraki still active in the business? I haven't been hearing much of her. Utada's going astray now as she just got married to this Italian guy.

Hamasaki was also really popular back then, even if it was just among the young girls. And that throne was taken away from her by Kumi Koda and AKB, as even now she's still got the attitude of a queen who can't sell. And her voice? It turned into the voice of this novelty singer Kohei Otomo.

And compared to these 2, you can not help but be amazed at how stable Amuro has been. People thought that she'd disappear along with the end of the Komuro boom, but she actually proved her worth much more when she was separated from Komuro. Even if she's from Avex too, it just goes to show that Hamasaki and Koda were nothing more than mere fads.
Utada's on a level where she has etched her name in the history of Japanese music, right? I don't get how you dare compare her to someone who's ragtag like Kuraki. I like both of them, and these comparisons always come up a lot, but I still don't get how you can pit them up against each other.
My music teacher who took up a singing course said that Kuraki's a better singer while Utada's singing has a peculiar touch to it

But that peculiarness is her personality. Hah, that's nothing but a mere opinion from a karaoke teacher w
I think Utada wins when it comes to the volume, vocal range, and technique. Kuraki might have the range and the technique, but she's got no volume. But I think she's amazing for establishing this new method called "whisper voice".
Utada peaked at "Can You Keep a Secret", and grade-wise, she wasn't that different from Kuraki. But Utada seems to have gotten sick of it and just said that she's going to do normal life stuff, so we actually don't know if she'll be coming back again in the field of music.

I definitely thought that I would hear Utada's song at the ending of the HERO movie, but it felt too awkward when it just ended normally like that. I thought that the scene would pause at KimuTaku and Takako Matsu's kissing scene and start hearing "Chi-kadzukitaiyo-" at that point.
Japan was split into pro-Kuraki and pro-Utada and was englufed in a huge flaming war.
Then it all exploded because of Hama-chan's comment and caused quite a huge uproar. It was something unimaginable from the current Japanese society where interest and concern have been segmented from each other.

I think all men back then supported Kuraki. Because she was cute?
What's with people getting the idea that men supported Kuraki at that time? If it's the absolute number, then Utada had more male supporters.
