TOKIO were guests at the May 23 episode of Music Station. During the chit-chat portion before their performance, a 19-year-old viewer asked them this question.
At times, they would plow the fields. They even went around Japan in a solar car, and even delivered packages. They reclaimed an island, and built a house. More recently, they've started to make ramen (from wheat). Farming, engineering, delivery, and being a band. They'll be at the summer festival, and of course they'll still be in dramas.
This has been a long-running theme and joke on the Internet, but this question has finally been thrown into their faces. All the members got a kick out of the question, as the leader Shigeru Joshima beamed and said,
"We're idols!"
Thus, putting an end to the debate as to what TOKIO really are.
TOKIO -- Idols who are capable of doing anything.
And their program which has allowed them to do so, The! Tetsuwan! DASH!! (NTV) has consistently been topping the ratings.
In one of the more recent episodes, Leader forgot to put a hole on the floor for the ladder of the little funaya that they were building and got depressed. But Masahiro Matsuoka accepted that mistake and moved on, to which Leader felt touched and started to cry. Even Tatsuya Yamaguchi sympathized with him, as they all cut a hole through the floor, which made Matsuoka excitedly say, "Hey, let's turn that into a chopping board!". This series of events showed their friendship with one another, as this episode got over 20%.
Their popularity and likability with the regular household is amazingly high. But the funny thing is, despite actually being idols, their CD sales are the lowest within Johnny's.

When we look at the first week sales of the latest single of other Johnny's talents, Arashi sold 501,000; Kis-My-Ft2 sold 203,000; Sexy Zone sold 151,000 and SMAP sold 139,000. TOKIO's sales are 1/30th of Arashi, and only 1/2 of Yuma Nakayama's 34,000. But as some artists have been releasing 3 or 4 different variations of their singles, with random special cards included, or event passes and other bonuses, TOKIO's policy of "No variations, no bonuses" in their sales shows how they proceed on doing things with good grace, like how they always have.
But in sharp contrast to this is their ratings. Not only is it top among Johnny's, DASH continues to fight for the top spot in ratings among all variety shows on commercial channels. They're popular with everyone, but no one buys their CDs...
And maybe because they're popular with everyone, people have started losing that sense of duty that "I have to cheer them on!", as no one feels the need to purchase multiple copies of their CDs just to show their support. TOKIO might even be the ones showing their support for the fans...
However, there are also cases where the ratings of the group member's programs would struggle, such as the case with Taichi Kokubun's morning variety Ippuku, and Tomoya Nagase's recently concluded drama Kurokouchi (both from TBS). This probably shows how people want to see TOKIO growing vegetables and building houses instead. So it might really be a good time to reconsider if they truly are idols.
But there's no doubt that Leader will once again deliver his best smile and say, "We're idols!" whenever people would doubt what they really are.

Things like this are fun when you just joke about it on 2chan and stuff, and it'll just make you sound stupid if you ask them this sort of question directly.
They're actually farmers, aren't they?
If Leader says so, then it must be true
They're the exact opposite of Arashi, huh
Releasing CDs is just their sideline so there's nothing wrong with this right?
They don't have any kimo-wotas who would hoard all their CDs
The singing is without a doubt the best in Johnny's, and they can play instruments too. If they just get blessed with a good song, I think they can get at least one mega hit under their belt. Like SMAP, they should make songs that can be sung by people who aren't even their fans.
Oh, so they're still releasing CDs? w
Yeah whatever, just cultivate vegetables properly. It's that time of the year, right?
Even though they have top-class ikemens in Johnny's such as Nagase, Yamaguchi, and Matsuoka, it's really quite a mystery w
I prefer Nagase's version of "Sorafune" to Miyuki Nakajima's

Hey buddy
I think they should be called a multi-talented unit to be exact...
Kokubun lowers TOKIO's likability.
It just means that TOKIO's value to society exists in a different place than Arashi
Even SMAP only sold 130,000 copies, so I think Johnny's around-40 talents should just stop releasing songs already
I haven't been watching TV at all these days so I'm not really in the know, but I like Shigeru Joshima best. I do think that there are a lot of men who like Shigeru Joshima the most. A girl at work though says she likes Taichi-kun.
The only Johnny's CD that I have- "Ambitious Japan".
But I have this image that they have much better songs than Arashi, though
Hey, they have masterpieces like "LOVE YOU ONLY" and "Uwasa no KISS"

Those are over a decade ago already w
If they include lottery tickets to their CDs for the chance to be able to visit DASH Island then I think they'll sell 10-fold.
Even if their sales are small within Johnny's, it's still enough
But I do think that Tetsuwan DASH has been able to make a successful change of format. I think they just tried to change the stuff that they're making TOKIO members do to coincide with the regression of their physical strength, but it can still be considered a huge success.
I think Tetsuwan DASH will still be a safe bet for at least the next 4 to 5 years.
Even my grandma was impressed and said that "These celebrities need to be able to do anything" after watching Tetsuwan DASH
I think they'd become much more popular if Kokubun leaves
Because they're skillful in anything you make them do.
Apart from singing.
I like DASH island and I got interested in this so-called main work of theirs called being an idol, but I think TOKIO's songs are horrible. They don't have songs like SMAP's which are catchy and that will last long.
They have the playing skills, but their songs don't reach out to the listeners because they're bad. Someone should go write songs for them.
If you include handshake passes to their CDs, I get the feeling that the crowd will consist mostly of men

Their popularity with grannies is also pretty amazing w
Kokubun doesn't have a good reputation, huh w
But I forgive him just because he dated that person, and not some super gorgeous woman.

Well, they're the only guys from Johnny's who are received well on 2chan ww
TOKIO is a uniquely distinct group from Johnny's, and I think that's the reason why people accept and respect them, but I also have this feeling that they don't even need to sing songs like the other groups. And whenever I see footages of them singing, it strangely feels awkward.
>No variations, no bonuses
Then they're actually doing quite well
They should include their CDs when they sell their new Otokomai rice
I normally watch TV for baseball or soccer, but I also watch DASH
I'm a 40-y/o man but they're the guys I like the most from Johnny's. Even their songs are good. I always look forward to their performances each year at the Kouhaku.
Sorry, I never bought their CD.
I did LOL though when Yamaguchi said that he feels most at ease when he has a plough in his hands w

They have survived because they're different. They all shine as a team, even if they don't individually.
They're the only group in Johnny's who plays music properly but they're not being rewarded for it. The horse derby song was done pretty well, though.
They're idols who aren't considered as idols by the people, in a good sense w
DASH is a program that you can just sit back and watch with the rest of your family. And you'd understand why it would get high ratings.
Nagase writes their songs, right?

Ambitious Japan's a masterpiece
Be Ambitious
"LOVE YOU ONLY", "Uwasa no Kiss", "Hanauta", "Be Ambitious", "Sorafune"
These are the only ones I know, but having 5 hit songs is a damn good thing already for a band, right?
When they first started in the village, they kept on failing at stuff since they didn't know what to do with things. And I think it was good that they kept showing those scenes without editing them out. I get the feeling that other Johnny's groups will just have the successful parts shown. And one of the things that I enjoy about the show is seeing how each member uses the experiences that they've gained throughout the years on the island, the ramen, and others. The only thing I don't like is the 0 yen diner. Just put an end to that already w

They may be idols, but everyone's already an oldie.
All of them look cooler when in tractors, doing carpentry work, or doing farm work rather than singing. And the audience who like that kind of thing aren't exactly the ones who would buy all the CDs.
I haven't looked at them for quite a while so I didn't know the situation surrounding TOKIO, but wow, I'm surprised seeing how Kokubun's reputation has dropped big-time ww
If they sell their CDs with a DASH island sightseeing tour ticket, I think it'll sell like crazy, even if the price was around 100,000 yen.
Aren't people just fans of Tetsuwan DASH, but not of TOKIO? Even if they replace the whole cast, it'll probably get bashed for the first 2 months then everyone will just get used to it.
Because Tetsuwan DASH doesn't necessarily have to be starred in by TOKIO

Because half of SMAP are slackers. They probably won't make any progress with their work.
But when other Johnny's talents would do DASH, I think they'd all go "Kyaaaaaaaaa!" just at the sight of an insect, and would even be reduced to tears when a snake comes out, right?
TOKIO are about the only guys who can catch a mamushi viper, right?
They should start making instruments next

Ohhh~! That's a nice idea. Why not try sending in a proposal (LOL). I'm definitely watching that.
The dynamic acts that I see from them in DASH is totally different in image with their pop-like tunes. Nagase's songs are so laughably pleasant. And then there's also the lingering image of "Sorafune".
There are quite a lot of Nagase and Matsuoka-led dramas that I like
Other actors just come to Arashi's program to promote their movies or their shows. No wonder it doesn't get high ratings.
I get the feeling that SMAP and Arashi members aren't friendly with one another within the group. Everyone in TOKIO on the other hand all seem like really good buddies.
The question thrown at TOKIO may be funny, but you can't say the same if that was aimed at Matchy-san

They're the ones I like the most in Johnny's.
Except for Kokubun.
Why is Kokubun so hated?
TOKIO's image
Shigeru Joshima = a dependable leader who takes charge of heavy machineries
Tomoya Nagase = a multi craftsman who can do anything, from farming to fishing (also has experience in shipbuilding)
Tatsuya Yamaguchi = leave every single task to me! A macho dude who's good at carpentry
Masahiro Matsuoka = A very precise chef who even makes his own ingredients
* Akio Sanpei = Rich in experience, he is TOKIO's brains/mood-maker
* Akio Sanpei just passed away last Friday/Saturday...
The man who you always see when they’re eating, but is almost never there when they’re working---- Kokubun.
TOKIO's just too stuffy. Kokubun who's the only pleasant one of the bunch is the only guy I like, though?

And why isn't Kokubun in the scene whenever they do stuffy work? w
Actually, CD sales figures in Japan's music industry have no value at all
Next up for them will be child-making
Yamaguchi actually has it tough. Proceeding to DASH island 2x a week after his early mornings on ZIP must be physically taxing on him considering his age.
My uncle who used to be a carpenter praised Yamaguchi's skills so he must really be amazing. He makes using chisels look easy, which actually isn't.
I don't think there are any people who hate them to the point that they'd change channels, but they probably don't have a lot of fans willing to spend for them. Totally like Katsumata w

I think DVDs of Tetsuwan DASH would sell well if they decide to release that. I hope they separate between the DASH village arc and the fossil excavation arc.
TOKIO shouldn't sell their CDs at CD shops, but in groceries instead with added bonuses like TOKIO-produced instant ramen or something. DASH viewers wouldn't be going to CD shops, but they'll definitely buy these things if they were sold in the supermarket.
I like the new song, but it isn't selling well, huh?
"LOVE YOU ONLY" and "Uwasa no Kiss" are classics
I like TOKIO because they play their instruments properly. And maybe that's why they seem so old-fashioned.
Other idols would have 2 to 4 different variants with different album covers or B-sides to increase their CD sales, but I think this number for a normal means of selling is quite a feat. As expected of our big bros from TOKIO.
TOKIO's traveling through a different path in Johnny's, in a good sense. I kinda feel that they'll last longer than SMAP.
It really does feel like TOKIO are the ones who are supporting Japan!
Rather, you guys like Leader, right?
