Artist Jin Akanishi is featured in the December issue of VoCE. It has a long interview, spread across 6 pages.

Akanishi wore a black suit in one picture and a cable knit top in another, and sealed his smile -- seemingly straying away from his idol persona.

He talked about the time of his hiatus up to his comeback, as well as his new song "Ainaru Hou e". He also revealed some stuff about his solo works while he was still with KAT-TUN.

Akanishi, the man who stayed true to himself as he continuously broke the "taboos" of being an idol by studying abroad, leaving his group, and getting married... When this topic came up, Jin commented: "I think I've been gradually trying to destroy this 'something' for quite some time now, it's not like I was trying to go up against these so called 'taboos' ". Akanishi naturally commented: "I just thought of growing up freely, normally..."

He also talked about his obsession with composing. He said that he's already used computers in composing since he was 20 and comments: "Were the equipment expensive? It was nothing! Because I was actually earning a lot! At least, to buy these equipment (laughs)."

--There seems to be a lot of bands who are doing well in both their concert ticket and merchandise sales. 

Yokoyama: 
Yes, merchandise and concert ticket sales are doing well. Most especially for touring bands, merchandise sales really is their life line. People will keep attending concerts as long as these bands stay cool. Why? Because you may be able to create copies of CDs and books, but you can never copy experience.

And that is why these bands can still earn a living through their concert sales even if their CDs don't sell well. But whatever the case, these bands will still need a manager, for example, a person who could negotiate with the concert venues how much they will be able to earn per concert.

But just doing concerts aimlessly won't bring in the profits. These bands should look at things on a long-term perspective, make use of various connections, and only then will they be able to earn a living from touring. But it has become increasingly difficult to achieve such dreams of being a musician, and to once again achieve the glory that the Hi-Standard achieved back in the '90s. This is truly mortifying as a musician, and I also feel a bit sorry for the bands now since we were able to have a taste of the good life when the times were still in the music industry's favor.

--You feel sorry?

Yokoyama:
There are times that I feel bad when I see stuff like Yamaguchi-kun of Sakanaction's tweets. I'm sure that this band could have sold a million records, or 2 even,  if they were just around 10 years earlier. I also feel this way for the CD shops that are so desperate now. I'm sure that there were a lot of shops back in the late '90s which earned money when they sold our CDs, and other artists' CDs. This is also true for the other retail stores. I feel bad, since they're all going up against this goliath called Amazon... How are you planning on going up against that?

Aya Hirano's 12th single sells only 1,471 units in its first week--- "This is my current self"

Aya Hirano (26), who once stood on top of the idol seiyuu (voice actor) world, released her 12th single titled "Promise" on the 9th.

After learning of the sales results -- 36th in the Oricon weekly ranking and only 1,471 copies sold -- she wrote on her blog that "This is my current self".

Hirano made her debut as a child actress, and made her huge break as a voice actress with Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu, which got her top honors at the Seiyuu Awards in 2008, both as a voice actress and as a singer. She reigned over the seiyuu world, and even extended her activities outside of animation and into serial dramas and variety shows.

Hirano has always had a "pure idol" image attached to her, but she suddenly revealed her love life on Fuji TV's Gout Temps Nouveau in 2010. The following year, her "Nyan-nyan" pictures with who was thought to be a member of her backing band got leaked.

Due to these series of events, her public image came crashing down, which drastically decreased the number of her fans. Her CDs which used to sell over 20,000 copies in its first week have taken a hit thanks to her scandal.

Aya herself is accepting these consequences. Despite hearing news of these sales, she wrote on her blog: "There are people who comment on the ranking and the number of sales, but I personally think that this is still something amazing. This is my current self. I'm not bitter about it, but I just hope that my feeling of gratitude has reached the people who have bought it and listened to it".

According to a seiyuu magazine writer: "Hirano-san declared that she'll be switching over to becoming an actress, but all the projects that she's been getting are voice acting roles. Her past image of being this idol-seiyuu is still pulling on her tail. But she's been in stage plays recently, most notably in Les Miserables and has also gotten hold of musical fans. She always said that she wanted to do musicals, so she might actually be content with her current self".

The damage that an idol-seiyuu receives once she is hit by a romance scandal is much more colossal than what sort of damage AKB48 would receive. Will Hirano still be able to gain more fans who are not otakus?
