Today is actually our 1st anniversary! There were a lot of ups and downs, but the 2 of us are happy (and shocked) at how our little blog has lasted a year :) We'd like to thank our regular readers for keeping things lively and giving us the motivation to provide you with these posts.
In as much as we would like to keep on bringing you these threads on a regular basis, we would also like to take this opportunity to go on a small break to recharge and focus on other things. We'll still update this blog, but probably not as frequently as before -- for the time being. Thank you everyone and please check back for updates!

ねらーやひろゆきの反対にあって申請は取り下げられた。これは騒動当時の２ｃｈのトップ絵。
When Takara (toy company) applied to have the giko cat's ASCII art trademarked in 2002. This was withdrawn by Takara after the Nellers and Hiroyuki strongly opposed to this. This used to be the art that graced the home page of 2ch at that time.

FLASHムービーブームに終止符を打った事件。2004年10月、「わた」氏が歌手グループ「O-ZONE」のヒット曲「Dragostea Din Tei」の歌詞を日本語に聞こえる様に歌詞を替え、
「モナー」を基にした猫のキャラクターを登場させたフラッシュ動画「マイヤヒー」を彼女のホームページ上で公開した。
このフラッシュについて雑誌に掲載されると、O-ZONEと楽曲ライセンスを契約していた株式会社エイベックス・グループ・ホールディングスの関係者の目に留まり、「恋のマイアヒ」として、売り上げが開始される。
このとき、「恋のマイアヒ」に収録するPVの為の編集を頼み、「マイヤヒー」の猫キャラクターの目・口等が編集され、一部不適切とさる空耳歌詞も編集した。
そうして、「恋のマイアヒ」は日本でもヒット曲として人気を呼び、PVの猫キャラクターを基に空耳歌詞から米酒を手にした猫「のまネコ」がつくられ、グッズ販売が開始された。
しかし、エイベックスがのまネコの商標登録の発表をすると、ネットユーザーの間で、「のまネコ」がアスキーアート「モナー」との類似性を疑念しはじめ、主にインターネットの掲示板「2ちゃんねる」の利用者の間で批判が広まった。
これに対し、9月7日、エイベックス側はのまネコについてオリジナル性を主張し、加えて「既存のアスキーアートの使用を制限するものではない」と初めてWeb上に公表した。
The incident that brought an end to the flash movie boom. October 2004, when a certain "Ms. Wata" changed the lyrics of O-ZONE's hit song "Dragostea Din Tei" into Japanese as the song "Koi no Maiahi", accompanied by a flash movie with the cat character "Mona-". This movie titled "Mai ya hi-" was uploaded on her webpage .
When this flash movie was featured in a magazine, Avex Group Holdings, who possessed the license to O-ZONE's songs, took notice and started selling the tune as "Koi no Maiahi". Along with the release, the cat which appeared on "Mai Ya Hi" had the eyes and mouth edited, and inappropriate portions of the lyrics were rewritten. "Koi no Maiahi" became a hit in Japan, and the cat character merchandise started hitting the shelves.
When Avex announced that the Nomaneko was registered for trademark, netizens soon started to point out that the character looks exactly like the ASCII art Mona, which led to 2channel criticizing Avex. On September 7, Avex insisted that the Nomaneko was original, and that this does not in any way restrict the use of existing ASCII art.
