Kyary Pamyu Pamyu: "I'm not an idol!!!"

How do you envision the next step in your career?

* "Ummm, that's.... I'm just living in the moment and doing whatever I want to do now. I have released a lot of songs, and a lot of people have suddenly gotten to know me in these past 2 years, but I don't want it to pass by like a fad no matter what. I want to continue my career as an artist."

* "I just want to bring forward the things that I've always wanted to do, may it be fashion or music."

* "It's not that I hate the 'idols', but I really think that I'm not an idol. I think that the people who are calling me an idol don't really know that much about me."

* "But I guess the things I do are similar to them, like wearing flashy clothes then smiling when I sing and dance."

* "I think that a lot of people think that this 'Kyary Pamyu Pamyu' character is being created by a bunch of adults from behind the curtains, and a 20-year-old girl is just playing the part of something that's completely fabricated."

* "Well, I won't deny that I'm not doing everything by myself as the people around me have been giving me support, but I'm still doing things my way within my own ability."

Well, an amateur would just think that what she's doing isn't different at all.
And it's pretty evident that she's looking down on idols.

Looks like she has already stereotyped the idols as "fabricated characters"

This is the reality of Japan's music industry, where someone who has zero musical knowledge can call themselves 'artists'.
This is why we aren't breaking ground in Asia.
We have to put a stop to this trend of recycling these unpopular female talents.

Well, she gets to say rash remarks because she's still popular.
This happens all the time.

Putting aside the argument if her looks are up to the standards for her to be called an 'idol', I thik what she's doing is no different from what the idols are doing.

If you look at her closely, she looks scary with her slanted eyes and sharp nose.

I think people see her as some sort of novelty singer instead of an idol.

She's someone who thinks she's an artist with her eccentricity as her selling point

Why is she so popular overseas?

Because she's eccentric and she has no nationality
I listened to her album, and I'm not sure if she can properly sing in tune.
I think they've used a lot of those robot voices and auto tune devices, and she might be forcing herself too much to try and create her own voice. Maybe that's why she strained her throat.

Everything Yasutaka produces is pretty much the same thing as that.

She's looking down on idols. She should just say that she just doesn't have the ability to cheer everyone up.
I don't think she's earning that much from her music. Her source of income is from TV appearances and commercials, so it's too far- fetched to call her an artist. She's just a 'talent'.

Then she should go indie and produce everything herself
I think the word 'icon' suits her better than the word 'idol'.
It feels that this is a project of trying to promote her as the current icon of Harajuku-style.
Then the team around her tries to market her in a way that maximizes her individualism and her artistic sense, so I think that she's pretty similar to the other self-produced artists.

Yeah, I really feel that way too.
She should just say something like, "I want to become Harajuku's new icon!"
That way, people won't be calling her stuff.
Umm, I think she's not showing gratitude towards the people backing her up.
Whatever anyone says, she's in the limelight thanks to these people.
I bet even she knows that, and I do believe that the strength of the supporting crew is really what counts.

Honestly, if she wore regular clothes and sang regular songs she won't even become popular.
She looks like she has Down syndrome.

But to me she's just a model who's trying to be popular with her costumes.
The adults behind her are just making her sing.
Her face looks like a doll. She doesn't show any emotion at all, it's so scary.
I wonder when we started calling these people in the music industry 'artists'. I think we kinda lost track in the 90s. Back then we had specific categories like singer, idol, singer-songwriter, bandman, folk singer, rock n' roller, etc. But people started calling them random things when they just started breaking these boundaries.

We can just call all of them musicians

If she wants to be called an artist, she should at least write her own songs.

Utada = Artist
Amuro = Artist
Hamasaki = Idol
This is my impression.

It's only in Japan where we're this particular about titles.
They don't even use the word 'idol' in the western part of the world.

She's not an idol nor an artist.
She's just some sort of novelty LOL

To think that she's just popular because of her producer.
She's just a puppet.

I understand how she feels, but I think that she is an idol as long as she insists that she's not an idol.

So she's followed after YUI's footsteps and has gotten the 'artist' bug, huh.

And now we even have mudslinging articles aimed at Kyary. This is proof that she's become popular.

Lady Gaga is being eccentric on top of her musicality, but Kyary has none of the latter.
I think she's like a dress-up puppet acting like a novelty idol.

  1. Personally, I think Kyary is really cute and fun, she seems like a nice person. Offending her looks has nothing to do with her being an idol...No, she is not eccentric like Lady Gaga, but she is 'kawaii' just like the way she dresses.
